近100年来，中国本土抽象艺术的发展源于西方架上抽象表现主义绘画的出现，伴随着它的传播，也使得当代中国人有机会审视自己本民族的抽象艺术文化历史。
几近30年的光阴，许德民浸淫在抽象艺术的舞台，已成为在创作、理论、推广和艺术教育各领域中一位无法抹去的人物。
